How do I find a cofounder?
9 years ago Shalini B“How do I find a co-founder?”
This is a classic startup problem.
It is always better to have 2 brains and bodies working towards achieving the success of one dream. The ideation may be solely yours but walking the road of entrepreneurship alone can be quite an arduous task. It can be quite daunting if you have to do all the work from setting up, registration, finding clients, attracting customers etc. all by yourself. Having a co-founder might not just help in reducing the physical or financial burden, but also provides you with support and inspiration and makes the journey exciting!
Finding a co-founder is pretty much like finding yourself a partner for lifetime. The wavelengths should match, expectations are to be set, and above all, you have to share the same goals, ideals and dreams. So, choosing a co-founder requires some careful treading. There is logically no right or wrong way of finding a co – founder, but here are a few tips that we would like to share:
#1: Before heading out for the hunt, jot down a clear job description for yourself and for the to- be co-founder. This way, you will be clear on what to look for, plus you will be able to quickly pick up the right person for the position.
#2: Look out for a co-founder as though you are looking out for investors. Do not consider family members as the first option. Network and meet new people in order to share experiences and to see if you find somebody who share the same passions and interests like you.
#3: Look for an individual with complementary skill sets. Someone who does not have the same educational background as yours. This is because in today’s competitive world, it is important for you to gather a team having varied experiences and diverse skills.
#4: Join professional matchmaking websites. Yes, you have read it right. There are online websites like StartupAgents and CoFoundersLab that allow you to connect with other professionals. You can also come up with blogs, and see if somebody expresses same interests.
#5: Join clubs and be an active participant at entrepreneurship and networking events. This will give you an opportunity to meet different kinds of people thus giving you a chance to interact with like-minded people. You never know, you might just get lucky and meet somebody willing to join you in your journey.
#6: If you meet someone, don’t just jump into it. Test the waters. Dating periods are always fun. Try to collaborate and work together on a few events or a pilot project before diving into the startup.
#7: Give out your intention of getting a co – founder on board clearly over the social media and other virtual networking sites. This way, somebody interested might approach you while you are on a look out for a co – founder.
Always keep an eye out for the Mr. Right (or Miss. Right) . You may meet them at a startup event, a networking session or even while partying with friends. Be choosy, and choose the best to walk with to succeed in your journey of entrepreneurship.
