Why should you hire interns for your startup?
9 years ago Shalini BWhile you are busy handling important aspects of your startup, like bringing in investors, building the product, or the legal formalities, it is quite natural for you to worry about the completion of trivial tasks at your firm. Have you ever considered hiring interns to finish these smaller and less ‘strategic’ tasks?
Interns who will not only help you with your daily mundane tasks but may also contribute creative ideas towards the growth of your firm? Wouldn’t it create a win – win situation for both of you?
On the job trainees, interns, temporary employees, practicumers… call them what you want – but they are those fresh lot of young minds still pursuing the education. They are the Gen Z and are known to be enthusiastic to learn new things, to pounce on any challenging opportunity and are ever ready to meet new people and are bound to bring in fantastic ideas and creativity to your firm.
It is always better to hire interns and test drive their competencies before offering them a full time employment with you. Through an internship program, you will be able to check on their core competence and commitment levels. On the other hand, while interning the students themselves will be able to gauge their passions, interests and strengths.
Here are a few possible benefits of running an internship program at your startup –
- Easy use of technology – FB, twitter, iPads, or any new technology? The young minds are always eager to learn all of them, and will help your firm in a long way by adopting latest technology at work.
- It’s their first work while they study. So, they will give their best and will perform extraordinarily. This will bring out best results for the work you assign them.
- Help with routine tasks – you can always assign them the trivial and mundane tasks  while you concentrate on more important aspects like pitching in to investors, taking care of legalities, refining the product or attracting the right customers.
- Bring in out of the box thinking – it is a proven fact that thoughts are different with generation’s changes. Allowing young minds to contribute to the ideations of growth may bring in out of the box ideas and strategies.
- Get more for less – As interns, students will want to prove their talent. So, you can give them this chance to prove their talent. This will bring in a win – win situation for both of you, thus getting you more output for lesser costs
- Branding among student community – Colleges are viral societies. By hiring students, you are hiring brand advocates for free. They will speak about your startup to their social groups, thus using the word of mouth strategy to market your startup plus this also lays the foundation for future hiring.
- Test drive your future employees – Lot of promises are made during an interview, but they fail to get implemented when actual work starts. Hiring students as interns will allow you a grace period to test their skills and commitment levels. It will also help you to improve your hiring processes based on the performance of the interns
