Vensvell: Redefining Engineering in Medicine
8 years ago Shalini B
Did you know that approximately over 17.1 million deaths occur each year due to cardiovascular diseases? This is more than deaths due to all cancers combined. This number is so huge mainly due to either lack of proper pre-stage diagnosis or lack of required technology while treatment.
The healthcare industry is growing huge across the nation and the best part is that the startup ecosystem has a huge contribution. One such contribution is Vensvell – a startup that is aiming at minimizing the problem of cardiovascular disease by making devices which will not only monitor the patient’s heart activity but also act as preventive measure against the cardiovascular diseases.
Their device is an innovative hybrid device to collect the medical data on Electrical activities, Acoustic activities and Muscular behaviour of the heart of the patient. The device will be a tiny wireless mobile patch attached to the patients’ chest neither hindering their mobility nor disturbing their daily activities.
The team has automated, intelligent diagnostic software that would make the analysis of the collected medical data (such as electrocardiogram, phonocardiogram, myocardial activities etc.) and detect the significant abnormalities in it. Later, the Patient can send the recorded data and the analyzed information to a diagnostic facility or his doctor for further investigation through the mobile phone or otherwise. The product extends a bit more by making a 3D model of the heart from their device and display the same to the doctor using Augmented reality for helping in visualization. Upon inspection of the data received, the diagnostic facility or doctor can send back their prescription to patient’s mobile.
The people who will be benefited from this product will be –
- Patients with cardio diseases
- Fitness and healthy lifestyle followers
- Cardiologists and medical advisors
“The patients have to undergo multiple diagnostic tests (which are tedious and costly) as these tests will help the doctor visualize the condition of the patient heart. Using our device we will make a real time 3d model of the heart which will help the doctors directly see the virtual model of the patient’s heart. This device is mobile, wireless, and tiny and will be available at very affordable price around INR 20000. Moreover, the patient’s heart has to be monitored for 48-72 hours for diagnosis of few abnormalities in heart, so it almost impossible for a doctor to constantly analyze for such a long time period.†Says the proud founder, Ravi when asked why they came up with this innovative product.
Vensvell’s product aims at developing a revolutionary device which not only improves the scenario of the healthcare in India but also worldwide. Ravi along with his elder brother, after spending five years in the industry, had enough resources to start off on their own. As they belonged to Hyderabad, they always wanted to have their startup here. There was lot of buzz in the Hyderabad start-up ecosystem with the launch of T-hub which also influenced the brothers’ decision. So at last they started their company in January 2016 with three members as signal processing service provider. At present they are a team of seven.
When we asked Ravi how the idea came up, he said, “It all started when we got a project from one of our clients to design an algorithm which had to determine the abnormalities of the heart from a 48 to 72 hour ECG recording. We had no idea about the biology of the heart but accepted it as it involved signal processing and it was challenging. So we had to start from scratch learning the features of heart and how they are reflected in the ECG. We had to visit doctors and diagnostic facilities and get a hold of it. We have worked really hard for it and we proud to say that we have an algorithm which is 98% accurate .We have also presented our work at one of the renowned international conference named Computing in cardiology 2016 at Vancouver ,Canada.â€ÂÂ
Ravi is the co-founder along with his brother Mr. Shastri. Apart from them, the team consists of –
- Dr.K.LAL KISHORE – Chief advisor and Mentor -Ex-Vice Chancellor JNTU Anathapur
- Amreeth M Vâ€â€ÂManagement consultant
- Phani Kiran – Signal processing engineer
- Rahul Tâ€â€ÂAndroid/IOS developer
- Bhima Shankar-Database management
- Our advisor panel consists of cardiologists, /electrophysiologists, whom we frequently trouble for the validation of our product
Shastri went on to complete his masters in electronics from IIT Madras and worked with General Motors and Indian railways for few years. Ravi completed his Masters in electronics from JNTUH and worked for some time as a systems engineer at Avantel Ltd and due to few unexpected turn of events he later joined a bank as a Manager later.
Just within one year, the startup has been able to leverage their startup to a large extent. Today, they are in the stage of validation and are looking to raise funding once the prototypes are validated. However, Invest India an initiative by the central government was very much interested in product and was helpful to show proper connections. Vensvell is also the members of the IBM Global entrepreneur program where they receive guidance from IBM and also credit to use their advanced cognitive tools.
Within a year they will launch their product and proceed with global approvals and patents. The team wants to look for possible collaborations with industry leaders and Medical experts. They are extending their research to neurology and oncology at present. However their mission has always been to make a device which can comprehensively study the condition of the whole human body.
Kudos team – you guys have been doing an amazing job. We wish you all the best and wish that you climb up the ladder of success to the highest point.
