Fitness Rooted in Tradition, Forged for the Future – How Mudgar Club is Revolutionizing Workouts

Share:

Mudgar Club, an Indian startup founded by Anjit and Sanjit Suhag from Rohtak, Haryana, is proving that some of the oldest fitness tools can be the most effective. This innovative company is breathing new life into the ancient art of Mudgar training, a practice dating back thousands of years, by modernizing it for today’s fitness enthusiasts. Known as the Mudgar in India, Karlakattai in South India, Meel in Iran, and Indian Clubs in the West, this tool offers a unique workout experience that blends strength, mobility, and tradition.

The Mudgar: Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Fitness:

Unlike conventional dumbbells and barbells that limit movement to 2D exercises, the Mudgar enables 3D movements and swings. This versatility strengthens muscles while improving mobility and overall fitness. Crafted from premium mahogany wood, every Mudgar is as durable as it is elegant, making it a functional piece of art.

Anjit, a yoga expert with a deep passion for fitness rooted in Indian traditions, wanted to reintroduce the Mudgar to a global audience. His brother Sanjit brought operational efficiency and a focus on quality to the venture, creating a perfect synergy for success. Together, they not only sell premium-quality Mudgars but also educate their customers on the proper techniques for this ancient workout.

Precision Craftsmanship: A Labor of Love:

The making of a Mudgar is a meticulous process that combines traditional craftsmanship with modern attention to detail:Sourcing the Wood: Only high-quality 6×6 mahogany blocks are used.

Seasoning the Wood: Each block is seasoned for 1–1.5 months to ensure durability.

Handcrafting: The Mudgars are shaped and polished over a week to achieve a sleek, professional finish.

Personalization:Users’ names are engraved on the Mudgars, making each piece a personalized fitness tool.

This craftsmanship ensures that every Mudgar is not only effective in delivering fitness results but also aesthetically pleasing, offering customers a product that combines tradition with sophistication.

Financial Success and Growing Demand:

Since its launch in December 2023, Mudgar Club has sold approximately 5,000 units, generating an average monthly revenue of ₹10 Lakhs. A 5kg Mudgar is priced at ₹4,000, with a manufacturing cost of ₹2,000, reflecting the premium quality of materials and craftsmanship involved.

Before July 2024, the company’s revenues ranged between ₹15–₹18 Lakhs monthly due to its combination of products and training services. Although a shift to focusing solely on manufacturing caused a slight dip in revenue, the Suhag brothers remain confident in their ability to scale their business and bring Mudgar training to fitness enthusiasts worldwide.

Shark Tank India: A Moment of Validation:

Mudgar Club’s appearance on Shark Tank India was a turning point for the startup. Seeking ₹50 Lakhs for 10% equity, valuing the company at ₹5 Crores, the founders delivered a compelling pitch that celebrated their blend of tradition and innovation.

While many sharks, including Aman Gupta, Vineeta Singh, Azhar Iqbal, and Kunal Bahl, opted out due to concerns about market fit and scalability, Ritesh Agarwal saw the potential in Mudgar Club’s niche product. He offered ₹50 Lakhs for 12.5% equity, valuing the company at ₹4 Crores. The founders immediately accepted the offer, appreciating his belief in their vision and the strategic value he could bring.
