Idea Express: Matches are made in heaven, but not for everyone
8 years ago Srinivas AkiIdea Express by StartupHyderabad is a bi-weekly column outlining some outlandish idea. Aspiring entrepreneurs are encouraged to slice and dice the ideas and run with them.
Marriage in the Indian context is more than just two people coming together. Its about the union of two completely strange families coming together and embarking on a new journey. Success of a match depends on how seemingly similar these families are.
But most of the existing matchmaking platforms match only by a oversimplified version of certain parameters. Onus of matching, actually is on the individual, by filtering and searching for matches himself. Matrimony is reduced to sort of a marketplace, where I browse through whats on the shelf. Meaningful matchmaking is more than search and filters.
eHarmony.com once famously rejected a guy after answering 200 some odd questions saying he is unmatchable. Or more like saying he is a sociopath. Western matchmaking services dig deep into the personality of two people and match them. Family has no discernible context. As much as we say otherwise, Indian matchmaking is no better.
Someone looking to disrupt the Indian matrimony and matchmaking should find a way to intelligently match families based on individuals, immediate family and even extended family. Some way to quantify and match families based on sensibilities, economies, avocations, roots, food habits, social stratification etc. etc.
Just like finding the right co-founder, finding the right co-family is the holy grail of the union.
