The Era of Deep Tech Startups in Hyderabad

It is not an exaggeration to say that with the current powerful wave of innovation happening in the city, Hyderabad will soon become the city synonymous with tech innovations. The shift towards deep tech has begun. From driverless cars to developing synthetic wombs, the world is witnessing massive transformations and breakthroughs in technological advancements, and probably the highest rate of change experienced ever.

“Deep tech is where engineering meets scientific discoveries” and that is the most beautiful and simplest definition we have come across until now.

Strong research forms the base of deep tech companies. Many companies are recalibrating their strategies towards deep tech. The challenges deep tech companies face go beyond funding and are more complex. Collaborations that foster innovation, provide market access and technical expertise, strong R & D help advance these companies.

With the kind of research happening across a wide range of fields including big data, robotics, healthcare, education, blockchain, automation and more, we believe that Hyderabad will be a major force in deep tech innovation. Though we are not able to publish the list of all the startups now, we were able to gather information about 60+ promising startups in Hyderabad. While startups working in the  healthcare and IT space dominated the list, there are several others from the e-commerce, wearables, media and education space.

Deep tech startups in the healthcare space are on the rise. Healthcare has become India’s largest sector and the application of deep tech technologies like AI, IOT, big data in the development of online platforms and marketplaces, creating affordable and noninvasive diagnostic technologies, devices and virtual assistants for patient care is on the rise.

With a population of more than 130 crores, tech intervention in diagnostics is a major boon and can disrupt the healthcare sector in India. For instance, RightBiotic, the signature product of a very young company xBITS, is a novel diagnostic kit that provides antibiotic sensitivity report of pathogens causing Urinary Tract Infection in less than 4 hrs while a standard culture and sensitivity test takes between 48-72 hours.

Unitus has invested in AI-based cancer radiology platform Predible Health that aids radiologists and surgeons to accurately and quickly diagnose and size the cancerous tissue and plan personalized treatment. This will not only dramatically improve the productivity of the small community of dedicated radiologists but also improve clinical outcomes of treatment and reduce patient mortality rates.

Once a major  IT offshoring destination, Hyderabad today is flooded with companies involved in the application of advanced technologies like AI/ML, Big Data, IoT and AR/VR driving innovation in the finance, media, tourism, e-commerce and several other sectors.

Merxius has developed an Extended Reality Authoring Tool with which AnyBodyCanXR from just a 3D model and interact with their XR file across devices ranging from iPads to Oculus Rift to Hololens without any coding. Think WordPress for XR. Agilitix.ai is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) analytics platform that can crunch millions of data points and turn them in actionable insights in real-time. NicheAI, Kore.Ai, SpaiKaven, Mashinga, GainSight and several other startups are focussed on using AI to provide simple enterprise solutions.

Innovations in the education space can greatly help in providing affordable quality education to tier 2 and tier 3 towns and cities. According to a report by Google, KPMG, the edtech market has a potential to reach $1.96 Bn by 2021. Players in this space like Scholr, Qalaxia, ThirdLeap are using AI to make learning easier. While Qalaxia helps students with homework, Thirdleap is working on developing a AI based Personal Teacher available 24/7 which will help students in learning math and solving math problems.

 Imagine not having to wait for your turn outside the trial rooms and making the entire shopping experience a breeze? Or having a personal stylist who scouts the entire internet and makes suggestions according to your interests and aspirations? Tri3D makes it possible for online shoppers to virtually try on clothes and Fabulyst, currently working as a layer over fashion e-commerce understands a user w.r.t. her aspirations, preferences & persona and gives customised recommendations; truly will be a dream come true for a woman.

Startups like Admono use Hyperlocal Intelligence and Computer Vision to make outdoor advertising more relevant. Virtual recruiting assistants like MyAlly, Hyre Labs can save huge recruitment costs and can help companies make better hiring decisions. MetaFact aims to debunk fake news in real time, increase the metacognition of the society and build a trust layer over the internet by harnessing the power of AI!

Restyro Technologies focusses on the research and development of polymer nanofibres to make useful fabrics for oil spill cleaning. They also promote nanofibers based products in energy and healthcare applications. Lemon Flip Solutions is working on high-performance RFIC SOC solutions primarily for military and defense applications.

Several startups are using AI, deep learning and other technologies to find efficient and effective solutions. Our list also includes startups that have identified opportunities and show promising technology.
