Way2News: The Desi Way to Get Your News

They say information is the oxygen of the modern times. We all need access to it, it has become a basic need to keep up with all the events and happenings zipping around the world in the form of a tornado of prints, pixels and public commentaries. According to a report by excelacom, in an internet minute, 320 new Twitter accounts are created, approximately 5,47,000 tweets are shared, there are 8,433 shares and 1.03 million video loops on Vine.  It has a distinct revolutionary flair, it is an agent of change across the globe. Under these circumstances, it is extremely integral for one and all to have fast and fluid access to it, and Way2news provides us with just that.

It all began when Raju Vanapala, first generation entrepreneur from small-town Vijaywada, and now Founder and CEO of Way2Online Interactive Media Ltd. decided to dally in the mobile phone app business.  Initially, the company ventured into creating a messaging platform – Way2SMS. The existence of the same provided him and his team of thirteen members a lot of useful cues regarding the new app they were trying to design.  They analyzed 65 million loyal users of Way2SMS and it was identified that most of them were from tier 2 and tier 3 cities.

India, being the land of diversity that it is, is home to people with very different sensibilities and preferences. Thus, it is extremely challenging to create an app that can reach out to all its masses. Keeping that in mind, the team finally came to the conclusion that a news app is their best bet to fulfill the unique needs of the Indian population.

It is also evident that millennial life is faster than ever before. People need to be able to catch up on the events around the world without having to spend too much time on it. In order to satisfy such short attention spans of the people, the team embarked on a journey to make an app that specializes in short form, vernacular content.

Three years later, Way2News has emerged as one of the top news apps in the country, giving tough competition to other business technology giants like’ Daily Hunt’  and ‘InShorts’. It has over 19 million app downloads today. The company has continuously strived to curate informative and entertaining content for its vast user base. It has a team of over 85 editors with their respective teams that work to formulate content for different regions manually.

With its beautiful flip-through UI and customised news snippets, the app just keeps getting better and better. Other than providing short-form news under various categories such as Business, Sports, Cinema etc, it also has features such as “Buzz”, that provide users with the most trending stories that are shareable across social media platforms at one tap, and digital magazines that cover a vast array of interests. It is available in eight regional languages and also in English for its metropolitan readers.

With the advent of economic growth, the technological revolution and campaigns such as Digital India, it is no surprise that the next generation of internet users is more rural, old, gender equal and vernacular. This is a more opinionated class, one that likes to hear, think and debate on everything happening around them in manners typical to their respective regions.  There is a huge market for regional content in India, in fact, at any given point of time, there are at least 2-3 apps that provide vernacular content on the top trending list on Google Play Store. Way2News is one of the revolutionary news sources in the country right now, for it manages to penetrate into the diverse strata of Indian society and brings them content that is hand-made and tailored to their unique preferences.
